COMMON ORTHODONTIC PROBLEMS

SORENESS or DISCOMFORT

When teeth move, they can become sore. This is normal, and it usually lasts several days. Each person will have a different degree of soreness. We recommend that our patients take an over-the-counter pain reliever. If the pain becomes severe or lasts for more than several days, please let us know.

Oftentimes, brackets can irritate the inside of your cheeks when you are first getting use to them. We have provided you with wax in case you experience this problem. Attempt to dry the area first, and then place wax on the irritating area. Ulcers can occur anytime and they are especially uncomfortable with braces. Try applying wax to the area to decrease the irritation.

BROKEN BRACKETS or LOOSE WIRES

If this is not causing discomfort, this is not an emergency. Please call us anyway so we can fix your appliances and properly schedule your next appointment. If you are experiencing discomfort and cannot come see us right away, we ask that you place wax over the bracket to hold it in place until we can see you. If an archwire is poking in the back of the mouth, place wax over the area until we can see you and trim it.

UNMANAGEABLE PAIN, FACIAL SWELLING or INJURY

If you have sustained an injury to the head, face or mouth — seek immediate help from an urgent care or emergency room. For infection, swelling of the gums or trauma to a tooth, your regular dentist is the best place to start. Your regular dentist is trained to handle an abscess, fractured, chipped or broken tooth. Your orthodontic treatment plan can be adjusted as needed once your tooth is repaired.
